Turkiye blocks access to Roblox

- By Torontoball

- August 7, 2024 23:24 GMT

Turkish authorities blocked access to the online gaming platform Roblox. The Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) listed "detection of content that may lead to child abuse" as the reason for the ban.

Roblox is a popular platform where users can create and play games. According to Esports.net, Turkey has one of the largest Roblox player bases globally.

This action follows recent bans on other online platforms in Turkey. Last week, access to Instagram was blocked for alleged non-compliance with Turkish regulations. Prior to that, a court banned access to the story-sharing platform Wattpad.

The Roblox ban has drawn criticism from some in Turkey. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu expressed concern about the decision's impact on the economy and technology sectors. Additionally, social media users highlighted the potential impact on Turkish game developers who rely on the platform for income.

The extent of communication and coordination between different government entities regarding the ban remains unclear.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed in Iran by suspected Israeli strike, raising concerns of escalation

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a predawn airstrike in Tehran, attributed to Israel. The incident could intensify regional conflicts, potentially leading to a confrontation between Iran and Israel if Iran retaliates. Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared that revenge was a duty and warned Israel of severe repercussions. The strike occurred after Haniyeh attended the inauguration of Iran's new president in Tehran and followed an Israeli attack on a Hezbollah commander in Beirut. The death could also impact negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage release deal in the Gaza conflict, where U.S. mediators noted progress. The strikes in Beirut and Tehran could undermine hopes for a Gaza cease-fire and risk broader regional conflict.

Website called Spy.pet selling billions of scraped Discord messages raises privacy concerns

A website called Spy.pet claims to have amassed a massive database of public Discord messages. This data, containing billions of messages from nearly 620 million users, is now reportedly being sold for cryptocurrency.

The alarming part? Spy.pet doesn't just offer the messages. They compile detailed user profiles, linking Discord aliases to social media and Steam accounts. This creates a goldmine for potential surveillance and harassment.

Their audacity doesn't stop there. They advertise an "enterprise option" – a chilling suggestion for training AI on stolen data. The owner even mocks privacy concerns with a meme, further fueling the sense of violation.

Discord, understandably, is investigating Spy.pet for violating its terms of service. The legality of the site's actions is also in question, potentially breaching European data protection laws. While the US lacks similar regulations, the potential sale of children's data could still land them in hot water.

This incident serves as a stark reminder: treat Discord messages with caution. Public servers, even those invite-only with friends, aren't truly private. If complete privacy is your goal, consider another platform.

Asiana Says Goodbye to its Last Passenger Boeing 747

Asiana Airlines is set to retire its last Boeing 747-400 by the end of March, marking the end of an era for the South Korean carrier. The aircraft, HL7428, MSN28552, will operate on one flight daily between Seoul Incheon and Taipei until its retirement.

Between March 1st and 25th, the aircraft will operate flight OZ711/OZ712, which is currently operated by 777-200s, according to the airline's schedule. The 747 was delivered to Asiana in 1999 on lease from GECAS and took ownership in 2005. It is powered by four GE Aviation CF6 turbofans and seats 398 passengers in three classes.

The 747 was parked in Seoul during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 but briefly returned to service in the second half of the year. It was parked again in May 2022 but rejoined the operating fleet in July, operating flights to Changchun in northeastern China.

According to Cirium fleets data, Air China is the only remaining passenger -400 operator, with one example operating several domestic flights. Other operators, such as Air India, Qantas, and Thai Airways International, retired the type during the pandemic when passenger travel demand plummeted amid border closures. Asiana's compatriot Korean Air operates 747-8s.

YouTube's PiP feature may be available globally to all non-premium users soon

YouTube is planning to roll out the PiP feature to all non-premium users globally soon. Since 2022, YouTube has been offering this in the U.S., but it appears that it recently released this feature to some non-premium users in Europe last week.

This experiment is debunked by recent comments made by YouTube's X/Twitter account, which claims that using PiP outside of the US requires a Premium subscription.

Several Reddit posts highlight users who discover picture-in-picture (PiP) features on non-Premium accounts. Two European users have reported encountering the same feature in a different conversation

To activate the picture-in-picture feature on YouTube, go to the profile icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, go to the Settings icon in the upper-right corner, select General, and turn on the feature. If Google has started offering PIP for free in Europe, the functionality may gradually be made available for free in other areas as well.

Marcos faces criticism for chopper trip to Coldplay concert

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s decision to utilize a presidential helicopter to attend a Coldplay concert last Friday has sparked public debate in the Philippines. Videos of Mr. Marcos enjoying the show circulated widely on social media, igniting criticism among many Filipinos.

The main point of contention: the use of taxpayer-funded resources for a personal event amidst Manila's notorious traffic woes. Manila, a metropolis encompassing 16 cities and roughly 13 million residents, holds the dubious title of "worst traffic in the world" among 387 cities surveyed.

While the concert venue, located about 30 kilometers north of Manila, would have taken regular concertgoers at least three hours to reach by road, Mr. Marcos opted for the swiftness of the helicopter.

The Presidential Security Group defended the decision, citing "unforeseen traffic complications" alongside the large number of attendees (40,000) as posing a potential security threat to the president, who attended with his wife.

However, many residents remain unconvinced. Social media comments expressed both frustration over the city's traffic and concerns about the misuse of public funds. Some, like Facebook user James Patrick Aristorenas, highlighted the optics of using official resources for personal activities, potentially constituting an abuse of power. Others, like Arvine Concepcion, questioned the financial implications, from helicopter usage and fuel to potential security costs.

While the debate continues, one thing is clear: Mr. Marcos' decision to take the "chopper to Coldplay" has left a complex mark on public discourse, raising questions about transparency, resource allocation, and the president's priorities in the face of everyday struggles faced by citizens.
