The death toll from the fighting has exceeded 400, with the majority of the casualties being Palestinians. Hamas says it launched the attacks in response to Israeli brutality and occupation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to turn the besieged Palestinian enclave into a "deserted island" if the attacks continue.
